Girona-Costa Brava Airport (Spanish: Aeroport de Girona) is Spain's eighth largest airport. The airport is situated 12.5km (7.8 miles) southwest of the city of Girona, in Catalonia. The airport is well connected to Costa-Brava, Barcelona, and the Pyrenees by its' superb transport links. The airport is situated in a tectonic depression called 'La Selva'.
Within the airport terminal building there are 6 car rental stations. You will fill in the relevant paperwork, and then you will go to pick up your car from down the road from the airport, next to the car park. In 2010, 4,863,785 passengers passed through 'Girona-Costa Brava Airport' and 43,290 flight operations took place. In 1993, the airport dealt with only 275,000 passengers. The passenger numbers have increased so much because of the increase in low-cost airlines, and low-cost passengers. The current airport was built in the year 1965 by the Spanish authorities. In May 2010, the Irish low-cost airline 'Ryanair' made the airport one of their bases; it is their third largest base. Other airlines such as 'Air Malta', 'Thomson Airways', and 'Jat Airways' also fly from the airport regularly. The airport flights cover all of Europe.
The airport is well connected to Costa Brava resorts including Lloret de Mar, l'Estartit and Blanes, and is about a 40 minute drive from the French border, offering a gateway to the Pyrenees and Ski resort of Andorra. The airport is well served by regular buses, taxis, and motorways. The airport terminal houses a large 'Aldeasa' multi-shop in the passenger boarding area, selling various newspapers, magazines, local goods, duty-free products, and souvenirs. There are various restaurants and bars in the airport, with the largest restaurant, the 'Food Gallery Cafeteria' catering for everyone, and is located in the public area of the check-in lobby.
